September In The Gardens 2006

Week 1 | Week 2 | Week 3 | Week 4

Week 1

General
Seed collecting.

Strimmed the wildflower area.

Started to prune all laurel hedges with secateurs.

Pruned out old canes and tied in new canes of all summer fruiting raspberries.

Reclaimed Garden
Removed RUNNER BEAN and TOMATO plants

Elizabethan Vegetable Garden
Weeding through beds.

Gentleman's Cottage Garden
Lifted ONIONS. Tidied through CHARD.

Dug over vacant areas.

Planted ENDIVE and LEEKS.

Week 2

General
Cutting back herbaceous plants in all borders as they go over, forking over and weeding as we go.

Finished cutting all beech hedges.

Trimmed to shape evergreen shrubs such as Elaeagnus,Escallonia and any  other summer  flowering shrubs if not done last month.

Spraying greenhouses and conservatory with insecticidal soap as white fly and red spider mite have appeared

Allotment
Staked BRUSSELS SPROUTS.

Cut tops of green manure MUSTARD.

Harvested CABBAGE; CARROTS and RADISH.

Parterre
Harvested KOHL RABI and RUNNER BEAN 'White Swan'.

Removed FRENCH BEAN plants.

Planted LETTUCE.

Elizabethan Vegetable Garden
Planted LETTUCE.

Ornamental Kitchen Garden
Spread organic slug pellets.

Week 3

General
Summer pruned apples and pears.

Victoria plums, Discovery and Katy apples are now becoming ripe and being harvested regularly.

Watering all pots, wall pots and baskets, especially when windy.

Allotment
Harvested SWEETCORN.

Stringing up ONIONS.

Starting to lift maincrop POTATOES.

Parterre
Harvested RUNNER BEANS.

Greenhouse
Clearing out all PEPPER; AUBERGINE; MELON and CUCUMBER plants that have stopped fruiting.

Week 4

General
Pruned stone fruits after fruiting.

Pruning rambling and climbing roses and tying in this years new stems.

Mowing less frequently now and have raised the blades slightly on mowers.

Allotment
Harvesting maincrop POTATOES.

Sorted through ONIONS and SHALLOTS and removed soft ones.

Bagged perfect POTATOES and taken to store.

Elizabethan Vegetable Garden
Harvested maincrop POTATOES and dug over newly vacant bed.

Greenhouse
Removed, shredded and composted remaining PEPPERS; AUBERGINES; MELONS and CUCUMBERS.
