October In The Gardens 2006

Week 1

General
After fruiting, trained plums and cherries were pruned if not done last month.

Forking over bare patches, incorporating our own garden compost and then planting.

Covered any ponds likely to collect the falling autumn leaves with netting.

Staked taller late flowering perennial, such as Aster, if the weighty flower heads were pulling them down.

Labelled all the different Dahlia varieties before the frosts blacken them.

Allotment
Harvested RUNNER BEANS; TOMATOES; LEEKS; CARROTS and LETTUCE.

Sorted through ONIONS and SHALLOTS.

Harvested POTATO 'Salad Blue' to be used as next year's seed potatoes.

Harvested CELERY.

Removed RUNNER BEAN plants now they have finished cropping.

Week 2

General
Started to close vents and doors on greenhouses at night as temperatures fall.

Harvested apples and pears and put them into ventilated polythene bags and took them to the fruit store.

Shredding garden waste, laurel prunings etc.

Started raking up leaves and filling leaf bins.

Parterre
Harvested TURNIPS and last of TOMATOES.

Removed TOMATO plants.

Dug over empty beds.

Tidied through brassica bed and removed yellowing leaves.

Put polythene over empty ground in readiness for early season use.

Harvested last of the SWEETCORN and outdoor TOMATOES and removed plants.

Elizabethan Vegetable Garden
Harvested CARROTS.

Weeded through beds.

Week 3

General
Pruning and tying in rambling roses if not done last month.

Reduced frequency of grass mowing as the growth rate is slowing down.

Some leaves have been collected using a mower on a high setting, these are then put into a leaf bin.

Checked that greenhouse heaters are working well as frosts will soon be here.

Reduced watering of indoor plants.

Allotment
Harvested pot grown POTATO 'Shetland Black' and 'Burgundy Red' to be used for seed POTATOES next year.

Tidied through brassicas.

Cleared out most of the TOMATO plants from the polythene tunnel.

Cut COMFREY and put into compost bin.

Parterre
Planted LETTUCE 'Little Gem' under cloche.

Removed RUNNER BEAN plants.

Elizabethan Vegetable Garden
Cut down tops from ASPARAGUS and shredded them before putting on compost heap.

Week 4

General
Cutting back perennials that have finished flowering and look untidy.

Any tall shrubs, such as Buddleja davidii, Roses and Lavatera, that are cut back in the spring are having half of their top growth cut back to prevent wind rock in the winter, this will then be pruned further in the spring.

Spiked with a fork to aerate then brushed sharp sand in to aerate compacted lawn areas.

Brought all tender perennials and shrubs in pots into the greenhouse( this was done late in the month as October this year has been mild). All these will be watered minimally throughout the winter.

Taking cuttings from tender perennials, these will replace older plants next season.

Allotment
Cleaned through inside, removing all debris,and washed polythene tunnel.

Greenhouse
Washed inside with environmentally friendly bleach and outside with pressure washer.

Sowed CAULIFLOWER 'Dok Elgon'; ONION 'Mamoth Improved' and CABBAGE 'Champion Giant' into trays.
