Week 1

General
Pruning LAUREL hedges with secateurs.

Cutting back perennials that have finished flowering and look untidy.

Forking over bare areas of soil and digging in garden compost.

Weeding.

Shaping shrubs if needed as well as pruning and tying in climbers such as rambling ROSES and HONEYSUCKLES.

Allotment
Digging over vacant areas.


Covered dug areas with polythene.

Greenhouse
Making newspaper tubes in readiness for SWEET PEAS.

Week 2

General
Shredding woody garden waste, mainly LAUREL clippings, and leaving it to compost for use next spring.

Aerated the worst areas of compacted lawn, using a fork and then brushing sharp sand into the holes to improve drainage.

Any tall shrubs, such as BUDDLEJA davidii, ROSES and LAVATERA, that would usually be cut back in the spring have had half of their top growth cut back to prevent wind rock in the winter.

Any non frost resistant pots have been bought into a frost-free place for winter.

Allotment
Tied BRUSSELS SPROUTS to canes and removed bottom leaves.

Dug out SWEET PEA trench and started to fill with BRUSSELS SPROUT leaves.

Greenhhouse
Sowing several SWEET PEA varieties.

Watering when required.

Going through seed catalogues and ordering next year's seeds.

Week 3

General
All tender plants have been moved into a frost-free greenhouse for winter and cuttings taken from suitable shoots so that we have good plants in the spring to replace older ones.

Raking up leaves as they fall and putting them into leaf bins.

Any frost susceptible plants left outside for winter have been wrapped in fleece, such as DICKSONIA and LAURUS nobilis.

Allotment
Pruned all BLACKCURRANT, REDCURRANT and GOOSEBERRY bushes.

Stored CARROTS, BEETROOT and TURNIPS in sharp sand and moved them to a cold, frost-free place.

Lifted and stored CELERY in moist compost in a frost-free place.

Put layer of shredded leaves into SWEET PEA trench.

Parterre
Planted LETTUCE Fristina' and ENDIVE 'Moss curled' and covered with cloche.

Week 4

General
General border work.

Allotment
Spread a layer of well rotted farmyard manure in the SWEET PEA trench.

Collected seeds from Heritage varieties to be used next year.

Directly sown BROAD BEAN 'Aquadulce Claudia' and covered with a cloche.

Remainder of APPLES and PEARS have been harvested, individually wrapped in newspaper and put into a dark, cold, frost-free place.

Parterre
Tidied through all beds and weeded pathways.
