Cutting back perennials that have finished flowering and look untidy. Forking over bare areas of soil and digging in garden compost. Weeding. Shaping shrubs if needed as well as pruning and tying in climbers such as rambling ROSES and HONEYSUCKLES. Allotment
Greenhouse Week
2 Aerated the worst areas of compacted lawn, using a fork and then brushing sharp sand into the holes to improve drainage. Any tall shrubs, such as BUDDLEJA davidii, ROSES and LAVATERA, that would usually be cut back in the spring have had half of their top growth cut back to prevent wind rock in the winter. Any non frost resistant pots have been bought into a frost-free place for winter. Allotment Dug out SWEET PEA trench and started to fill with BRUSSELS SPROUT leaves. Greenhhouse Watering when required. Going through seed catalogues and ordering next year's seeds. General Raking up leaves as they fall and putting them into leaf bins. Any frost susceptible plants left outside for winter have been wrapped in fleece, such as DICKSONIA and LAURUS nobilis. Allotment Stored CARROTS, BEETROOT and TURNIPS in sharp sand and moved them to a cold, frost-free place. Lifted and stored CELERY in moist compost in a frost-free place. Put layer of shredded leaves into SWEET PEA trench. Parterre General Allotment Collected seeds from Heritage varieties to be used next year. Directly sown BROAD BEAN 'Aquadulce Claudia' and covered with a cloche.
