Week 1

General
Shaped, thinned out and removed dead wood from late summer flowering shrubs.

Lightly trimmed POTENTILLA fruticosa hybrids into shape.

Tall ROSES and BUDDLEJA reduced in height to prevent winter wind rock.

Erected fencing around the Garden for the Less Mobile.

Leaf raking and mowing up leaves most days.

Allotment
Removed manure from Hot Box and spread over bare ground.

Removed compost from bins in preparation for painting with preservative.

Parterre
Beds dressed with compost and pathways cleaned.

Pruned standard GOOSBERRIES and re-tied.

Elizabethan Vegetable Garden
Sown BROAD BEAN 'Aquadulce'.

Week 2

General
Measured BUXUS hedging that has been affected by Box Blight before they are removed so that alternative hedging can be ordered.

Ornate brick edging from the York Handmade Brick Company re-set around Courtyard Garden pond.

Power washing algae from any fencing that needs cleaning.

Levelled meditation side of Japanese Garden and laid a woven polypropylene material to prevent weeds before covering with our chosen aggregate.

Allotment
Removed and destroyed all BRUSSELS SPROUTS that were badly affected with greenfly.

Orchard
Dug garden compost into GOOSEBERRY and CURRANT beds.

Week 3

General
Emptied pond in Country Paradise Garden, removed overgrown plants, repaired lined where necessary and refilled with water.

Climbing and rambling ROSES that were still flowering earlier have now been pruned.

GUNNERA leaves cut off and overturned to help protect the crown from frost.

When wet riveting engraved labels onto their aluminium pegs.

Allotment
Cut back CHRYSANTHEMUMS on cut flower area and shredded tops before putting onto compost heap.

Tidied LEEKS by removing any leaves showing signs of rust.

Gentleman's Cottage Garden
Beds dressed with compost and pathways raked.

Cut down CRAB APPLE as it was casting too much shade.

Glass House
Now that most seeds have arrived they have been sorted into alphabetical order and engraved labels sorted so that any new ones can be made.

Week 4

General
Emptied compost large bins in the compound area and spread excellent grade compost onto the borders.

Woody prunings being shredded on wet days.

Hired a stump grinder to take three tree stumps down below soil level.

Feeding birds in feeders and bird tables with peanuts and wild bird food.

Cleaned out all bird boxes.

Checked stored fruit and vegetables and removed any showing signs of rotting.

DAHLIAS lifted and bought into the greenhouses and stored upturned have now been turned the right way, put into crates and covered with dry compost.  They will be left under the benching in the frost-free greenhouse until next spring.

Allotment
Covered an area with polythene to protect the area from winter wet for early crops.

Dug up some LEEKS and put them into a trench, back filled, in case of bad weather so that we have some available.

Covering old Melbourne frames with new polythene and fastening with homemade clips made from cut up pieces of 25mm blue water pipe.

Continued winter digging when weather allows.

Parterre
Replaced polythene cover on purpose built cloche that fits exactly over the square beds.
