General
Put pumps back into most ponds and water features but have kept back the ones in shallow water until a later date.

Sprayed plants in conservatory and tender plants in greenhouse with soft soap.

Planted one row of POTATO 'Swift'.

Directly sown CARROT 'Ideal'; LETTUCE 'Tom Thumb'; PARSNIP 'Lancer' and RADISH 'Sparkler'.

Parterre
Directly sown LEEK 'King Edward' (baby veg), 'Autumn Giant' and 'Bulgarian Giant'.

Nursery
Potting up large clumps of various herbaceous plants with the intention to use them in the 'Gardeners' World Live' show garden.

Tidying show plants.

Lining out plants to be used as stock for dividing at a later date.

Sown Onion 'Red Baron' and 'Redmate'; LEEK 'Bulgarian Giant'; MARIGOLD 'Sumo Mixed'; GARLIC CHIVES; LETTUCE 'Pandero' and PUMPKIN 'Atlantic Giant' into trays.

Multi sown LEEK 'Musselburgh' into modules.

Potted up TOMATO 'Tropical Ruby', PEPPER 'Bolivian Rainbow', 'Mini Bell Yellow', 'Mini Bell Red', 'Mini Bell Chocolate', 'Numex Twilight' and CHILLI 'Winter Warmer'.

Received and sown into trays new varieties from Suttons and Dobies to be released in 2004. We will keep you informed on their progress. They are: PEPPER F1 'Lani', CARROT F1 'Eskimo'; LETTUCE 'Granada'; TOMATO 'Sultana' and BASIL 'Neopolitan'.

Week 2

General
Cut back, divided plants and re barked the grass bed.

Continuing to spray with soft soap in the conservatory and greenhouses.
Lifted some spring flowering bulbs from other parts in the gardens and re-planted in the Woodland.

Put all furniture back into the gardens.

Raked and topped up gravel pathways.

Allotment
Planted ONION sets 'Sturon' and 'Turbo'.

Direct sown PEA 'Little Marvel'; RADISH 'Cherry Belle'; SPRING ONION 'White Lisbon'; LETTUCE 'Embrace', 'Set', and 'Pandero'; BEETROOT 'Bolthardy'; and CARROT 'Resistafly'.

Elizabethan Vegetable Garden
Planted ONION sets 'Red Baron'.

Direct sown RADISH 'French Breakfast'; LETTUCE 'Little Gem'; SPRING ONION 'White Lisbon'; BROAD BEAN 'Witheim' and BEETROOT 'Bolthardy'.

Week 3

General
Cleaned through grass bed, dug up and divided plants requiring it and topped with a thick layer of bark.

Gave all lawn areas their first cut.

Started to ventilate conservatory and greenhouses on warm days.

Topping up water in all water features caused by evaporation due to warm and breezy weather.

Dividing and replanting overgrown clumps of SNOWDROPS now they have finished flowering.

Directly sown LETTUCE 'Little Gem' and PARSNIP 'Tender and True'.

Sown under cold frame in BRASSICA seed bed BRUSSELS SPROUT 'Bedford - Filbasket'; CABBAGE 'Redsky', 'Red Drumhead' and 'Greyhound'.

Planted POTATO 'Foremost', 'Lady Christl' and 'Vanessa'.

Prepared SWEET PEA bed and planted various varieties.

Ornamental Kitchen Garden
Planted RHUBARB 'Champagne'.

Gentleman's Cottage Garden
Planted RHUBARB 'Victoria'.

Week 4

General
All netting removed from ponds.

Lawns aerated using a solid tine mechanical aerator and sharp sand brushed into the holes.

Replaced barrel pool in the Ornamental Kitchen Garden with a large plastic tree pot lined with butyl as the wooden one had rotted.

Pruning ROSES, SANTOLINA, GARRYA, ARTEMISIA, VINCA and PENSTEMON.

Cutting back old tatty leaves on all ferns.

Allotment
Cultivated two plots one with a rotovator and on forked over.

Planted POTATO 'Pentland Javelin' and 'Maris Peer'.

Elizabethan Vegetable Garden
Planted THYMUS citiodorus, citriodorus 'Golden Queen' and 'Heba Barona' and SALVIA officinalis 'Icterina' in the herb wheel.

Planted CAULIFLOWER 'Mayflower' and 'Idol' from modules.

Direct sown BEETROOT 'De Choggia'; PEA 'Rondo'; LETTUCE 'Cerize' and 'Rusty'; KHOL RABI 'Logo' and SPRING ONION 'Guardsman'.

Artisan's Cottage Garden
Planted BROAD BEAN 'The Sutton' from 7cm (3") pots.
