June In The Gardens 2007

Week 1 | Week 2 | Week 3 | Week 4

Week 1

General

Pruning after flowering- SALIX gracistyla 'Melanostachys’ and various VIBURNUM varieties. We remove about one third of the oldest branches to the base to relieve congestion and promote new growth. Our large PHORMIUM plants had the old brown leaves and last years flower spikes removed to make way for the new ones.

We started trimming our BUXUS hedges with shears and our BEECH hedges with hedgecutters, with the BEECH putting on much more sappy growth than usual – this was probably due to all of the rain we’ve recently experienced.

Spraying an insecticidal soft soap solution in the conservatory and greenhouses, as needed, with some plants being mainly affected by aphid and red spider mite.

General

Some new plants were planted into the Alpine House. We tend to soak the beds that the pots are plunged into then not water again until the plants look thirsty, alpines like a well drained growing medium and cool roots. We find this method better than watering little and often.
