Week 1

General
Planted out bedding and tender perennials in various parts all over the gardens.

Dug up winter flowering PRIMULAS and potted them up to use this winter.

Put up hanging baskets and pots filled with summer bedding.

Spraying pests on roses with soft soap.

Any AUBRIETA or ARABIS that have finished flowering were cut back hard.

Allotment
Planted out RUNNER BEAN 'Galaxy'; DWARF FRENCH BEAN 'Hestia' and 'Flamenco' and LETTUCE 'Boston Burgundy'.

Hoed between rows.

Sideshooting SWEET PEAS.

Ornamental Kitchen Garden
Planted out FRENCH BEAN 'Purple Queen' and LETTUCE 'Mini Green', 'Can Can' and 'Burgundy Boston'.

Parterre
Planted out CAPE GOOSEBERRIES.

Elizabethan Vegetable Garden
Planted out SWEET CORN, self blanching CELERY 'Loretta' and TOMATO 'Fablonelystrbjs'.

Nursery
Final preparations for the Gardeners' World Live Exhibition with cleaning and tying up of show plants ready for transit.

Glass House
Put TOMATOES and MELONS into their final positions.

Tied in CUCUMBERS.

Potted up micro plants of POTATO 'Shelland Black' and 'Highland Black'.

Week 2

General
Clearing old DAFFODIL stems now that they've turned brown.

During dry weather soaking newly planted bedding.

Pruned back any overgrown CLEMATIS montana varieties where needed.

Any tall perennials not staked earlier in the year are staked as they are seen.

Overgrown clumps of spring flowering perennials such as PULMONARIA are being divided.

Pruned PLUMS, CHERRIES and PEACHES.

Allotment
Planted out LEEK 'Firena', 'Autumn Giant', 'Musselburgh', 'King Richard', 'Bulgarian Giant' and 'Rani'.

Sideshooted and removed tendrils from SWEET PEAS.

Parterre
Replaced old Strawberry plants.

Glass House
Cutiing back Penstemon
over wintered under glass.
Bedding seedlings moved off heat, to harden off in heated greenhouse.
Potting perennial seedlings sown in December and January.

Week 3

General
Clipping BUXUS hedging.

Tying in climbers that are hanging.

Thinning out blanket weed and any other invasive plant in all ponds and water features.

Pruned GRAPE vines.

Weeded and then mulched around bases of trees, all over garden, with bark.

Feeding all pots and hanging baskets containing bedding with maxicrop seaweed feed.

Sideshooting and removing tendrils from SWEET PEAS.

Directly sown RUNNER BEAN 'Flamenco'.

Elizabethan Vegetable Garden
Directly sown RUNNER BEAN 'Flamenco'.

Gentleman's Cottage Garden
Planted out PARSLEY.

Nursery
Two work experience students from our local school started their two week stint.

Glass House
Fed TOMATOES and sideshooted.

Week 4

General
Shredding on wet days.

Staking tall plants.#

Tying in climbers.
Dead-heading ROSES, LUPINS, IRIS sibirica and PERSICARIA bistorta 'Superba'.

Trimmed Nut walk and HORNBEAM arbour.

Completely emptied beds in Alpine House as part of one side was collapsing so we have taken the opportunity to completely replant both sides.

All BUXUS hedging and topiary clipping now finished.

Allotment
Removed and destroyed ONIONS 'Sturon' and 'Turbo' that had been grown from sets as they had downy mildew.

Thinned out SWEDE.

Tied SWEET PEAS and TOMATOES.

Directly sowed RUNNER BEAN 'Painted Lady' and FRENCH BEAN 'Aramis'.

Planted BROCCOLI 'White Sprouting' and 'Purple Sprouting' and CABBAGES 'January King', 'Tundra' and 'Celtic'.

Directly sown LETTUCE 'Pandero'.

Layed SWEET PEAS.

Planted KALE 'Dwarf Green Curled' and 'Redbor' and LEEK 'Bulgarian Giant'.

Elizabethan Vegetable Garden
Planted KALE 'Showbor'.

Sprayed TOMATOES, PEPPERS, AUBERGINES AND BRASSICAS with soft soap.

Potted on POTATO 'Shetland Black' and 'Highland Burgundy Red' into 3 litre pots.
