Week 1 | Week 2 | Week 3 | Week 4

Week 1

General

We continued trimming up our BEECH hedges with hedgecutters and BUXUS hedges with shears.

Any rambling ROSES that had finished flowering were pruned and tied in. Many came into flower then the heavy rain spoiled them so they were also deadheaded.

The PELARGONIUM cuttings that were taken back in January had rooted well so these were potted into 12cm pots.

Allotment

Tidied through polythene tunnel.

Sideshooting cordon TOMATOES.

Dug out all remains of harvested CAULIFLOWERS, CABBAGE and CALABRESE and forked over area ready for the next planting.

Weeding through root crops.

Harvested POTATO 'Lady Christl'.

Still picking RASPBERRIES.

Greenhouse

Finished potting TOMATOES and PEPPERS for use in the smaller greenhouses.

Week 2

General

Pruned BUDDLEJA globosa, WEIGELA, PHILADELPHUS, CYTISUS, CHOISYA, SYRINGA and VIBURNUM.

The long whippy growths on WISTERIA were shortened to approximately six leaves or buds from their bases, although this isn’t too crucial as they’re shortened again later in the year.

Regularly watering and dead heading potted plants in the conservatory and greenhouses.

Mowed when dry enough.

Allotment

Planted out CABBAGE 'Offenham 2 Flower of Spring' and SWEDE 'Ruby'.

Hoed through LEEK and ONION area.

Week 3

General

Any blanket weed growing in ponds was removed. This is an ongoing job throughout the growing season as well as topping up the water levels.

With all of the wet weather we found ourselves working indoors quite often, this gave us the opportunity to give all of the glasshouses thorough clean outs, we also replaced the capillary matting where needed.

Allotment

Planted out CAULIFLOWER 'Clapton'.

Parterre

Planting CELERY.

Greenhouse

Finished potting remaining TOMATO varieties into 10 litre pots. Rather late doing this as a combination of slow growth from the plants due to low light levels this year and waiting for the delivery of coir compost.

Potted all AUBERGINES and PEPPERS into 5 litre pots.

Potted LETTUCE 'Unrivalled' and 'Pandero' and all BRASSICAS sown on 14th June into 8cm (3") pots.

Sprayed AUBERGINES and CUCUMBERS with soft soap due to attack of red spider mite.

Tied MELONS onto supports.

Sowed LETTUCE 'Cos mixed' and 'Winter Density'; CABBAGE 'Wheelers Imperial' and 'April' and BROCCOLI 'Rudolf' into trays.

Week 4

The Reclaim Garden water feature wasn’t flowing well so it was taken apart and given a thorough clean.

Border work  - weeding, forking over, deadheading.

Very wet this month, so not much mowing or border work carried out.
