July In The Gardens 2005

Week 1

General
Regularly topping up ponds and water features and removing blanket weed as it appears.

Topping up mulched areas if starting to look sparse.

Allotment
Took growing tip out of PUMPKINS now that at least one fruit has set.

Dug out CELERY trench.

Watering regularly in dry weather.

Parterre
Took out PEAS and BROAD BEANS now they have finished cropping.  We left to roots in the ground and just removed the top growth.

Planted SWEET WILLIAMS.

Greenhouse
Sown LETTUCE 'Salad Bowl', 'Unrivalled' and 'Dickson' into trays.

Watering TOMATOES , MELONS, AUBERGINES, PEPPERS and CUCUMBERS every day.

Week 2

General
Started to put in edging for pathway in the Mediterranean Garden.  We are using 10 x 5cm (4" x 2") wood cut into short lengths and banged into the ground at irregular heights.

Cutting back all BEECH hedges, using a hedgecutter.

Watering newly planted plants during dry and breezy spells.

Allotment
Added lime to bottom of trench prior to planting CELERY 'Giant Pascal'.

Started to fill in LEEK trench.

Planted LETTUCE 'Salad Bowl'.

Greenhouse
Feeding TOMATOES, MELONS, AUBERGINES, PEPPERS and CUCUMBERS with a high potash liquid seaweed feed.

Ventilating on hotter days.

Week 3

General
Dead heading ROSES and all perennials that have finished flowering and the seed is not required for propagation by the nursery.

Watering pots around the gardens and in the greenhouses daily in hotter weather and every other day when cooler. Also feeding potted flowering plants weekly with a high potash seaweed liquid feed.

Felled our two CHERRY trees in the orchard as they had become very badly infected with silverleaf, leaf curl, amongst others, and were beyond saving.

Allotment
Planted LETTUCE 'Fristina', All Year Round' and 'Rossetta'; FENNEL 'Zefa Fino'; ONION 'White Lisbon'; ROCKET; LEEK 'Bulgarian Giant'; CELERY 'Giant Pascal' KALE 'Showbor' and CURLY KALE 'Reflex'.

Hoed and weeded all areas.

Greenhouse
Side shooting TOMATOES.

Regularly checking for new male and female flowers on MELONS and fertilising female flowers when necessary.

Watering TOMATOES , MELONS, AUBERGINES, PEPPERS and CUCUMBERS every day.

Week 4

General
Cutting back flowering stems of Herbaceous POTENTILLA, GERANIUMS and DIGITALIS now they have finished flowering.

Weeding and planting through borders, where required, and incorporating compost.  All freshly planted plants are watered in well.

Keeping bird baths topped up.

Allotment
Sowed MUSTARD where 1st Early POTATOES had been as a green manure.

Picked over RASPBERRIES.

Elizabethan Vegetable Garden
Planted Basil 'Red'; PARSLEY 'Moss Curled' and LETTUCE 'Salad Bowl' and then applied Slugbiz to deter slugs and snails.

Lifted last of POTATO 'Swift'.

Weeded and tidied through all areas.

Gentleman's Cottage Garden
Directly sown ONION 'White Lisbon'.

Weeded through beds.

Reclaim Garden
Planted LETTUCE 'Salad Bowl' and CELERY 'Self Blanching'.
