December In The Gardens 2006

Week 1

General
Started to prune all deciduous trees, including APPLES and PEARS.

Started to put out food for the birds.

Pruned WISTERIA.

Spiked compacted areas of lawn and then brushed sharp sand into the holes.

Tidied through tender perennials under protection in greenhouse, removing leaves showing signs of disease and dying flowers.

Allotment
Dug trench to store LEEKS in case weather turns very frosty.

Turned compost bins.

Greenhouse
Removing yellow leaves from potted LETTUCE, PARSLEY and CARROTS.

Week 2

General
Started to dig up and divide perennials that needed it with the left overs going to the nursery.

Any trees or shrubs growing in the wrong place or having outgrown their spot have been moved.

Watering in greenhouses and conservatory when required.

Allotment
Emptied hot box and spread well rotted manure onto vacant ground.

Checked through all fruits in store and removed any showing signs of rotting.
Pruned GRAPE vines.

Nursery
We had confirmation with regard to exhibiting at the following flower shows in 2007:
Harrogate Spring Flower Show 26-29th April;     Chelsea Flower Show 22nd-26th May;      Gardeners' World Live Exhibition 13th-17th June;        Hampton Court Palace Flower Show 3rd-8th July;  Tatton Park Flower Show 18th-22nd July and      Game Fair, Harewood House 27th-29th July. We hope to exhibit at some others flower shows later in 2007 and details will follow, as and when we get confirmation.

Week 3

General
Forking over bare patches in borders incorporating garden compost where possible.

Put dry DAHLIA tubers into crates and covered with dry compost. The crates were then put under the benching in a frost free greenhouse.

Removed leaves from HELLEBORUS orientalis and their varieties so that the emerging flowers can be seen in all their glory.

Digging up and dividing perennials.

Elizabethan Vegetable Garden
Tidied through beds and weeded pathways.

Week 4

Although the gardens, nursery and coffee shop are open over the Christmas and New Year period all the staff take a well earned rest, so no jobs recorded for this week.
