December In The Gardens 2005

Week 1 | Week 2 | Week 3 | Week 4

Week 1

General
Adding well rotted manure and lightly forking over general borders.

Pruning all deciduous trees that needed it, removing crossing or rubbing branches, cutting out diseased wood and shortening over-long branches.

Allotment
Cut tops from BROAD BEANS being grown as a green manure crop and dug them in.

Dug trench and put in LEEKS so that if weather freezes the ground we still have some to harvest.

Nursery
Started to sow herbaceous seeds into modules.
Tidying through plants on the sales area and cutting back perennials where required.

Greenhouse
Lightly watering, when required.
Cleaning yellow leaves from potted LETTUCE.

Week 2

General
Cleaned all water features. We have left the pumps in the smaller features this year and will leave them running on colder nights to prevent freezing.

Shredding woody garden waste.

Allotment
Emptied hot box and spread the now well rotted horse manure over what will be next year's BRASSICA bed.

Greenhouse
Lightly watering when required.

Sown PEA 'Douce Provence' into a length of gutter.

Week 3

General
Conservatory plants are regularly dead-headed and older leaves removed. Watering sparingly when required.

Fixed fine mesh chicken wire to slippery wooden walkways such as railway sleepers and decking.

Allotment
Pruned GRAPE vines by cutting back all shoots coming from the main framework back to two buds. .

Greenhouse
Sown BROAD BEAN 'The Sutton' into 8cm (3") pots.
Sown ONION 'Ailsa Craig' and 'Lancastrian' into modules.

Week 4

General
Pruning WISTERIA.

Tidying through borders.

Allotment
General tidy.

Weeding around fruit trees and bushes.

Greenhouse
Put POTATOES into trays to chit and then placed the trays under staging in a frost-free greenhouse.
