December In The Gardens 2003

Week 1 | Week 2 | Week 3 | Week 4

Week 1

General
Completely replanted the Wildlife Garden to be more attractive to wildlife.

Spreading shredded garden material as a mulch on some borders.

Built new raised bed next to PENSTEMON bed where BUXUS hedge was removed and burnt.  This will be filled with a well drained soil mix and house more PENSTEMON varieties.

Rolled out plastic walkway matting on pathways and muddy grass areas to protect them from muddy feet and wheelbarrows during the winter.  It will also prevent too much 'puddling' on the grass areas therefore protecting the grass.

All garden furniture brought into cover so that it can be treated during periods of bad weather.

Allotment
Cut tops out of FENUGREEK as it was beginning to go to seed due to mild weather.

Checked through fruit and veg in store.

Glass House
Put out seed POTATOES into trays so that they can 'chit'.

Week 2

General
Made rake to be used to rake aggregate in Japanese Garden.

Built extra compost bins in compound area to cope with all our green material.

Put new roof on the hermitage in the Woodland Garden - replaced roofing felt and wired on bundles of sticks.

Pruned GRAPE vines - all sideshoots back to 2 buds.  Also replaced any broken wires.

Started to winter pruned APPLES and PEARS.

Trimmed badly damaged leaves from HELLEBORES.

Spread sand on one particularly badly drained area.
