Week 1

General

Any rambling roses that had finished flowering were pruned and tied in.

Topping up water features regularly.

Border work  - weeding, deadheading, planting(any new plantings need regular watering), cutting back any perennials that needed it such as oriental poppies and some hardy geraniums to get a possible flush of flower late on.
Mowing, lawn edging, strimming hedge bottoms and other hard to mow areas.

Elizabethan Vegetable Garden

Weeded all beds.

Week 2

General

The floors of the glasshouses and conservatory were damped down in the mornings to keep a cooler atmosphere throughout the day.

The Escallonia hedge surrounding the Mediterranean Garden was trimmed back quite hard as it had finished flowering. After all of the raspberries had been harvested we cut out the fruited canes and tied in the new ones that had had been produced this year(these will fruit next year).

Allotment

Planted out CABBAGE 'Ormskirk' and CAULIFLOWER 'Gallion'.

Sprayed CABBAGES with Dipel and Savona.

Gentleman's Cottage Garden

Planted RADDICHIO 'Palla Rossa' and LEEKS.

Elizabethan Vegetable Garden

Collected seed from BROAD BEAN 'Crimson Flowered'.

Planted out LETTUCE 'Pandero' and 'Unrivalled'.

Greenhouse

Potted on LETTUCE 'Lobjoits Gem' and 'Winter Density' into 12cm pots.

Sowed LETTUCE 'Valdor', 'Sentry' and 'Winter Density'; RADDICHIO 'Palla Rossa'; PAK CHOI; TURNIP 'Purple Top Milan'; JAPANESE ONION and CABBAGE 'Duncan', 'Durham Early', 'April' and 'Pixie' into modules.

Tidying up CUCUMBERS and MELONS and netted any MELON fruits that needed it.

Cleaned under benches and gave the floor a good sweep.

Sideshooted, watered, fed and tied up TOMATOES.

Week 3

General

The Lonicera nitida ‘Baggessens Gold ‘ hedge on the outside of the Ornamental Kitchen Garden was trimmed.

Summer pruning all apples and pears(not just trained varieties), all of the new shoots produced this season were shortened to approximately 3 or 4 leaves/buds form their point of origin. This puts more energy into ripening the fruit and it allows more sun to reach them.

Regularly watering and dead heading potted plants in the glasshouses and outside.

Allotment

Planted CAULIFLOWER 'Trevi'.

Removed PEAS now they have finished cropping.

Hoed through PUMPKINS, although no fruits have yet set.

Tied newspaper collars around trench CELERY and begun earthing up.

Lifted ONIONS and placed on drying rack.

Harvesting POTATOES.

Preparing the Allotment for the Vegetable Weekend when all areas will be open for public viewing.

Artisan's Cottage Garden

Planted out LETTUCE 'Pandero' and Unrivalled' and ONION 'White Lisbon'.

Elizabethan Vegetable Garden

Planted out TURNIP Tokyo Cross', ENDIVE 'Kentucky' and KOHL RABI 'Purple Delicacy'.

Parterre

Planted out CAULIFLOWER 'Sunset'.

Thinned out LEEF BEET 'Perpetual Spinach'.

Ornamental Kitchen Garden

Planted out CAULIFLOWER 'Trevi', Romanesco' and 'Sunset'.

Week 4

General

As we have been getting dry and hot weather, we have been mowing without collecting the clippings.

Once that all of the Beech hedges had been cut we started trimming the Yew hedges.

Allotment

Finished harvesting 2nd early POTATOES.

Harvested CARROTS and dug over vacated space.

Cut COMFREY and NETTLES and put into compost bin.

Elizabethan Vegetable Garen

Lifted POTATO 'Charlotte'.

Planted out LETTUCE 'Mixed Leaves'; CAULIFLOWER 'Patriot' and 'Galleon'; CABBAGE 'Ormskirk' and 'BROCCOLI 'Claret'.

Parterre

Planted LETTUCE 'Mixed Leaves'.

Planted last of the MARIGOLDS around the edges of the beds.

Planted FRENCH BEAN 'Valder'.

Gentleman's Cottage Garden

Planted out CABBAGE 'January King'.

Greenhouse

Fed and watered TOMATOES, AUBERGINES and MELONS.

Sowed LETTUCE 'Valdor', 'Sentry' and 'Lobjoits Green' and JAPANESE ONION 'Senshyu Semi-Globe Yellow' into modules.
