Week 1

General
Dead heading and cutting back flowered stems if not needed for seed. Some stems left if used for winter interest or if the seeds will feed the birds.

Cutting BEECH and LEYLANDII hedges.

Allotment
Lifting ONION 'Mammoth' and 'Lancastrian' and put on chicken wire to dry.

Sorting through ONIONS that have been left out to dry and removing any that show signs of disease or rotting and using damaged ones.

Picking RASPBERRIES and RUNNER BEANS.

Directly sown LEAF BEET 'Perpetual Spinach'; CARROT 'Early Nantes' and 'Autumn King'; BEETROOT 'Boltardy' and ONION 'White Lisbon' and 'Guardsman'.

Cut off all POTATO haulm as it was showing first signs of blight.

Elizabethan Vegetable Garden
Weeding and cultivating soil surface.

Replaced cabbage white butterfly decimated CABBAGE with CABBAGE 'Stonehead' and BRUSSELS SPROUT 'Breeze' and covered with netting.

Greenhouse
Sowing LETTUCE 'Lollo Rossa', 'Sangria' and 'Unrivalled' and CABBAGE 'Spring Hero' and 'Wheelers Imperial' into trays.

Pricked out LETTUCE 'Blush' into modules.

Week 2

General
Started to plant the Mediterranean Garden and topped planted areas with pebble mulch.

Weeding through borders.

Allotment
Cut COMFREY for use in compost bin.

Lifted POTATO Estema and they have come out almost perfect.

Side-shooted all TOMATO plants.

General weeding.

Chopped MUSTARD being grown as green manure and left it for two days before digging in.

Spread Slug-biz snail and slug deterrent around LETTUCES after noticing some damage.

Picked SWEETCORN 'Mini Pop' now some have reached about 15cm.

Pruned back all fruited RASPBERRY stems and tied in new shoots to fruit next year.

Harvesting early varieties of APPLE, such as 'Discovery', as they ripen.

Greenhouse
Pricked out LETTUCE 'Lollo Rossa', Unrivalled', 'Mini Blush', 'Red Salad Bowl', 'Little Gem' and 'Sangria' into modules.

Week 3

General
General border work involving weeding, cutting back, dividing, forking over and pruning.

Allotment
Harvested all TURNIPS.

Planted out module grown LEEKS and covered them in fleece to try and bring them on.

Harvested seed from BROAD BEAN 'Crimson Flowered' and cut back tops to ground level so that the roots can be dug in.

Parterre
Directly Sown RADISH 'Jolly' and 'Pink Beauty'; LETTUCE 'Valdor' and LEAF SALAD 'Italian Mix'.

Greenhouse
Sown CABBAGE 'Pixie'; LETTUCE 'Valdor' and 'All the Year Round; Turnip 'Purple Top Milan' and 'Snowball' and LEAF CORIANDER into trays.

Week 4

General
Taking cuttings from tender perennials as insurance over winter losses and to bolster our stocks.

Mowing, strimming and lawn edging.

Continuing to cut deciduous and evergreen hedges.

Watering pots inside and out.

Allotment
Weeding between rows.

Planted LETTUCE 'Sangria', 'All the Year Round', Valdor' and 'Unrivalled'.

Picked off cabbage white butterfly caterpillars from all brassicas.

Dug over vacated 1st early POTATO bed and raked level.

Collecting fallen fruit each day.

Broadcast BROAD BEAN 'Express on empty brassica area.  The seed will be pushed into the ground where it lands and then grown as a green manure.

Ornamental Kitchen Garden
Planted LETTUCE 'Sangria' and 'Blush'.

Parterre
Planted LETTUCE 'Unrivalled' and 'Blush'.


Planted module raised LEEK 'Autumn Giant'.


Greenhouse
Potted up LETTUCE 'Valdor' and 'All the Year Round' to be grown on in the greenhouse.
